Nationalists and Liberals do well in De Rand

The Flemish nationalist party N-VA and the liberal party Open VLD has put in a strong performance in the Flemish Brabant municipalities without special language dispensation for Francophones to the South and East of the capital. These municipalities have large expat communities, hence our interest in the results in Beersel, Hoeilaart, Overijse, Tervuren and Zaventem.

In Beersel, which is home to the N-VA’s Ben Weyts the party polled almost a quarter of the votes (24.5%).

Only the current Mayor Hugo Casaer’s Christian democrats did better, gaining the support of 31.3% of the people of Beersel. Last time around the Christian democrat/nationalist alliance list gained 37% of the votes.

The francophone UF list is down 6% at 14 and loses one of its four councillors.

The liberals are down 9.1% at 7.3%, the far right Vlaams Belgian is down 9.5% at 4.9%. The local Open Beersel list has 6.4% of the votes and has gained its first councillor.

Liberals gain absolute majority in Hoeilaart

With almost half the votes under his belt, Hoeilaart’s liberal Mayor Tim Vandenput will be a happy man.

The liberals gained a massive 16.3% and now enjoy the support of 49.2% of the people of Hoeilaart.

The Christian democrat/nationalist alliance came in second on 27.1%, 9.1% down on 2006.

The local Pro Hoeilaart list (14.8%) and the Francophone UF list (9%) were more or less unchanged on last time.

Overijse backs Brankaer

With 41.4% (up 1.6%) of the votes backing his Ov2002/nationalist/Christian democrat slate, Dirk Brankaer (photo) is, like last time, just one seat short an absolute majority.

OV2002/N-VA/CD&V’s coalition partner Open VLD is the big winner, up 6.8% on 2006.

Alderman Sven Willekens' party won 18% of the votes and is up two seats. The Francophone Plus list won 24.3% of the votes.

The Greens now have a second councillor after polling 11.8%. The far-right Vlaams Belang was down 2% at 4.5% and loses its only councillor.

Liberals still biggest party in Zaventem

In Zaventem Mayor Francis Vermeiren’s (photo) liberals are still the biggest party.

The liberals won 32% of the votes, down 3.6% on 2006. The Francophone UF last won one fifth of the votes, up 0.3% on last time. The Flemish nationalist N-VA was close behind with 19.5%.

The progressive SPA-GR-LEEF list polled 13.2% of the vote, down 1% on 2006. Eric Van Rompuy’s Christian democrats won the support of 12.1% of the votes.

The far right Vlaams Belang no longer has a seat on the council, having won just 3.1% of the votes (down 7.8% on last time).

Blue and yellow in Tervuren

Although Mayor Eulaerts liberal/local list was down 7%, it still came out on top in Tervuren with 24%. Hot on his heels was the nationalist N-VA on 22.2%. The Christian democrats came in third with 18.7%.

Last time the nationalists and the Christian democrats formed an alliance and won 27.5% of the votes.

The greens are up 2% on 18.2% .

The Francophone Tervuren Unie list was down 3.7% and has lost 2 of its 6 seats.
