Trabelsi terror threat: extra protection for those involved

Belgium's security services have heightened the alert level following the secret extradition of the convicted terrorist Nizar Trabelsi to the United States where he faces new charges.

There are fears that the extradition could trigger acts of revenge. The Prime Minister, Elio Di Rupo, and the last three Belgian Justice Ministers as well as three leading judges have all been given extra security details. Belgian embassies abroad have been asked to be more vigilant.

Belgian Justice Minister Annemie Turtelboom is receiving close protection. The threat against her is seen as the most serious after she gave the go-ahead for the Tunisian former soccer player's extradition. The judges being given extra protection include the terrorism expert at the federal public prosecutor's office and the examining magistrate who got Trabelsi to confess his part in plans to blow up the Kleine Brogel airbase where US nuclear arms are stocked.
