Cars on Belgian roads becoming older
The average age of a Belgian car keeps increasing. It was 8 years, 1 month and 14 days at the end of last year, compared to 7 years, 10 months and 21 days 5 years ago. This is according to figures collected by the Automobile Industry Federation Febiac and published by the dailies De Tijd and L'Echo. Almost 1 in 3 cars on Belgian roads are over 10 years of age.
Experts are citing different reasons to explain the trend. Cars have become more reliable and maintenance has become easier, they argue.
Another reason is the economic crisis. Motorists have postponed buying a new car, while companies have extended lease contracts for company cars in an effort to save money. These leasing contracts used to be shorter, with more new cars being thrown on the market. Company cars account for a substantial part of the rolling stock on our roads.
