American tourist injured at Brussels Airport

At Brussels Airport in Zaventem, a man was shot in the foot when he tried to prevent two thieves from stealing a handbag early this morning. The man, an American tourist, was taken to hospital.

The incident happened at the entrance C of the departure hall shortly before 6 o'clock this morning. The man witnessed how two thieves were stealing a handbag and decided to intervene. However, one of the thieves shot him in the foot.

The two perpetrators managed to escape and are still on the run. The man was taken to hospital, Jan Van der Cruysse, the spokesman of Brussels Airport,  told reporters. He is not in a life-threatening condition.

It is very exceptional that an incident like this takes place at Zaventem Airport. Police are searching the area for any traces that the thieves could have left behind (photo). They will also watch CCTV images.
