Expat Flemings miss chips, shrimps and 'Flemish humour' most

Life for an expat is not always easy. Often people working abroad miss many things from home. But what do Flemings living abroad miss? This is the question that the Flemish-Dutch satellite TV channel BVN put to 1,700 Flemings.

Somewhat surprisingly it's not friends or relatives that Flemings and Dutch people miss most. It emerged that Flemings miss chips or Belgian fries and their local chippie most, while the Dutch miss real Dutch herring.

Flemings also hanker after everyday delicacies that you can find in every Flemish bakery and have a hard time tracking down abroad. Shrimps are the surprise entry on number three in the list of what Flemings miss most. Beer on number 4 is probably more predictable. Sandwich spreads and fillings are on number five followed by Belgian chocolate.

Flemish humour features on number seven, while friends and family get a look-in on eight. The top ten is completed by cheese and markets. In order to highlight the results of their survey BVN presented outgoing Premier Yves Leterme with a basket with some of the delicacies that most Flemings miss abroad. Mr Leterme, who is leaving to join the OECD in Paris, could clearly see the joke!
