Thalys: "Buy your ticket in Lille!"

Thalys that operates high speed rail services between Brussels and Paris is putting up the prices of its cheapest tickets. The operator also intends to separate passengers travelling on cheap tickets from those who paid a little more for the privilege.

In future passengers paying a different rate will also travel in a different carriage.

The cheapest tickets go from 25 euros to 29 euros. Thalys's Violaine Tennstedt: "Only rates for 'comfort-1' don't change."

TramTreinBus, the Belgian association that defends the interests of the travelling public, is incensed by the price hike: "This is a lot more than inflation. It's striking that the price of the more expensive tickets and first class tickets is not going up! People with a lot of cash to spend are being spared. It's an anti-social measure" says Jan Vanseveren.

"We're advising people to ignore the Thalys. Travel to Lille in France. There you can buy a Paris return ticket for 30 euros. Departing from East and West Flanders you'll get there more quickly too."
