Gypsies not welcome in Meeuwen-Gruitrode

Fri 20/07/2012 - 11:42 The municipal cabinet in the Limburg municipality of Meeuwen-Gruitrode is considering taking legal action against a group of 70 Rom gypsies that have set up camp in a local nature reserve. The municipal authorities say that the Rom families didn’t ask permission to set up in the nature reserve and an order for them to vacate the area was issued on Thursday.

"Part of the site is in a nature reserve where temporary construction such as tents and caravan are not allowed. The have erected a tent inside the nature reserve that they use to pray.

Secondly, the site is not a recognised camp site and they are going to want to stay there with their caravans until the end of the month.”

The municipal cabinet has enlisted the services of a solicitor. The solicitors will advise on what legal proceedings can be taken against the illegal camp.

However, the Acting Mayor says that the municipal authorities have no plans to remove the Rom families by force.
The Rom gypsies say that they want to hold a religious festival in Meeuwen-Gruitrode and have nowhere else.
