First e-driving licence for miracle driver

Eugène Breynaert, an 88-year-old from Liedekerke in Flemish Brabant, has received the first copy of the new e-driving licence in Belgium. Mr Breynaert came to prominence when his parking talents came to wider prominence after the accompanying video was screened on national TV.

The e-driving licence paves the way for the European driving licence that is being introduced starting 2013. It has the shape of a bank card, is valid for ten years and contains information that can also be read abroad.

After a six month pilot project new drivers will be issued with the new driving licence. Gradually existing holders will be invited to swap their paper licences for new electronic ones.

It was the outgoing Transport Minister, Etienne Schouppe (Flemish Christian democrat), who also hails from Liedekerke that handed out the first licence.

Eugène Breynaert was chuffed to be asked. He's been driving for 65 years without a single accident.
