Belgians are living longer and longer

Life expectancy in Belgium continues to rise. The 2009 mortality figures reveal that the average man in Belgium lives until he’s 77. Average life expectancy for women currently stands at 82 years. There are big differences between the regions with Flemings living an average of 2 years longer than Walloons.

Average life expectancy in Belgium as a whole is 79.8 years. In Flanders life expectancy is higher at 80.7, while the figures in Greater Brussels (79.6) and Wallonia (78.4) are lower than the average for the country as whole.

Over the past decade, life expectancy in Belgium has risen by two years. Women can expect to live 5 years longer than men.

Flemish men live an average of 78.1 years, while men from Greater Brussels and Wallonia have an average life expectancy of 76.7 and 75.4 years respectively.

Flemish women live an average of 83.1 years. Brussels women live for an average of 82.2 years, while Walloon women have an average life expectancy of 81.2 years.
