Belgium boasts 5 universities in Times rankings

Belgium has 5 universities in the top-200 of the prestigious "Times Higher Education World University Rankings". This is compared to 3 universities two years ago. The Catholic University of Leuven (KU Leuven) is Belgium's best pupil in the class at number 61 in the annual ranking.

The British magazine Times Higher Education issues new university rankings on a yearly basis. The University of Ghent (UGent) is up from 93 last year to 85 now, while Antwerp University (UAntwerp), a newcomer is last year's listing, steamrolls through to 164th place, coming from 192.

The Francophone university Université Catholique de Louvain (UCL) has to be content with number 172. The only newcomer in the list compared to last year, is the Francophone Brussels university Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) at 176.

Europe's top class universities are losing ground. Oxford hangs on to second place, but ETH Zürich - Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zürich, the world's number 1 apart from the U.S. and the U.K., loses 2 places and is now at number 14. The university of Munich is no longer in the top-50, now at 55 coming from 48.

The top-10 is completely made up of American and British universities, with the California Institute of Technology heading the list for the third consecutive year.

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings have built a strong reputation in the academic world. Among the parameters used to compile the rankings are education, scientific research, transfer knowledge and the international character.
