700 told more cancer tests were needed by mistake

Around 700 people were given the wrong news when they underwent a screening for colorectal cancer. The patients were all told that further tests were needed for bowel cancer.

Belgium's Centre for Cancer Detection confirmed to the daily Het Nieuwsblad that something had gone wrong. Dr Patrick Martens: "A human error occurred. Somebody linked the wrong address file to the wrong letter."

"We tried to correct the mistake as soon as we became aware of it by informing everybody concerned that they had or were about to receive the wrong letter and that the right letter was on its way to explain what went wrong.
