"Belgians have never been richer"

Belgian families had accumulated a fortune of 1,991 billion euros at the end of last year. That's according to figures supplied by the Belgian National Bank. The figure is 63 billion up on the year and reached a record high. It represents an average of 178,400 euros per person, or 417,400 euros per family. However, 70 percent of the Belgian families have to be content with a capital below the national average.

Those with shares at the stock exchange had a good return on investment. Investors welcomed a value increase of 27 billion euros all together, the financial dailies De Tijd and L'Echo report. This means that in fact, the rich are getting richer. 70 percent of the Belgians are living below the national average.

If we don't take into account property values, the total wealth amounts to 1,085 billion euros, also a milestone.
