6 in 10 badly informed about zipper method

6 in 10 motorists think that the zipper method applies in places where it actually doesn't. That's according to an internet poll carried out by the Flemish motoring association VAB, in which 604 drivers took part. The test filed different traffic situations, in which a driver has to merge with other traffic.

Late merging or using the zipper method became compulsory in Belgium on 1 March. Drivers failing to follow the rules, risk a fine of 55 euros. However, this does not mean that the zipper method can be applied anywhere. This is where many motorists get things wrong. 60 percent think they can use this particular merging method - 1 vehicle from the left lane, followed by 1 vehicle from the right lane etc - in situations where they actually can't.

The main point of confusion is where motorists enter a motorway. Many think the zipper method can be applied there - especially in the case of a traffic jam - while merging traffic entering the motorway has to give way.

When do we have to zipper method?

  • Only when traffic is slow, e.g. in a traffic jam
  • Only when the number of lanes is being reduced, e.g. when road works are taking place
  • If this is the case, use late merging. Only merge when the road narrows

Motorways and roundabouts are the big exception. Even when traffic is stuck there, the zipper method does not apply.
