Tervuren woodlands hit by blaze

Fire services from Overijse, Brussels and Wavre joined forces to put out a blaze that raged in a forested area in Tervuren. It took them 4 hours to get things done. 1.5 hectares were lost in the fire. Investigators suspect the fire was lit.

The blaze started in the area between the Leonard junction in Oudergem and the Vier Armen area in Tervuren. Fire services had difficulty reaching the fire, which was located deep in the woodlands, near the Vijfbeukenweg and the Vijversweg in Tervuren.

1.5 hectares (some 4 acres) were eaten by the flames as mostly young trees were hit. It's been dry for a while now, which is why the fire could spread. (photo: archive picture Zoniënwoud)

In Glabbeek (Flemish Brabant) a forest fire could only just be avoided after some people working in an orchard decided to burn some wooden poles. When the fire spread, they ran off. Fire services came at the scene and were only just able to prevent the blaze from spreading to a nearby forested area.
