"Green light for all cyclists at the same time"

The Belgian Institute for Road Safety (BIVV) wants to test a system under which all cyclists at a crossroads get a green traffic light at the same time - while all cars are waiting - despite the fact they are heading in different directions. This should avoid dangerous situations with cars.

Earlier, new regulations allowed cyclists to make a right turn at a crossroads even when the traffic light is on red. However, this is only possible at certain locations, and when a special traffic sign indicates that this is allowed.

The latest idea comes from abroad. Experts think it's safer to let all the cyclists waiting at a crossroads go first, while the cars are still waiting. This should avoid the dangerous situations that happen at present, e.g. when cars turn right while a cyclist has to go straight.

The BIVV looked at how the system works in Germany, England and Enschede in the Netherlands. Their conclusion is that it can be useful, on the condition that the road junction is not too busy and too big. It's not a good idea to implement the idea at busy intersections, the BIVV thinks. It is not certain when the pilot project can start in Belgium.
