Anderlecht miss a unique opportunity

In football, defending champions Anderlecht could have become the big winners of the Easter weekend, but they failed against KRC Genk, missing a number of goal-scoring chances and returning empty-handed from Limburg. In the end, it's Standard retaining the lead with already half of the Play-off 1 competition behind us.

Zulte-Waregem had lost at Sporting Lokeren (3-2), while Club Brugge and Standard drew 0-0. With 3 of the 4 title challengers losing precious points, Anderlecht could have become the big winners on Monday evening.

Anderlecht travelled to Genk, the team with the worst record of the top-6 teams. They had the better chances in Limburg, but missed all of them. The best opportunity was probably a penalty kick, but young Serbia striker Aleksandar Mitrovic targeted the post (photos).

In the end, Anderlecht paid this cash as the former Glasgow Rangers midfielder Thomas Buffel made it 1-0 for Genk with only a couple of minutes to play. It was Genk's first win in the play-offs.

After 5 of 10 days of play, Standard remain in first position with 40 points. Club Brugge have 39, Zulte Waregem 37 and Anderlecht 36. Cup winners Lokeren follow in 5th position with 31 points, while Genk are bottom with 28 points.
